Post-Traumatic Stress in Children: A Guide for Parents

Post-Traumatic Stress in Children: A Guide for Parents

What is Trauma in Children?

Trauma encompasses events that overwhelm a child’s coping mechanisms and sense of safety, such as natural disasters, accidents, or loss. Because children often struggle to express complex emotions verbally, they often process trauma through behavior, play, and physical symptoms. These reactions are not "naughtiness" but rather an internal struggle to feel safe again.

Identifying the Symptoms

Play Re-enactment: Repeatedly acting out the traumatic event through games or drawings.

Sleep Disturbances: Nightmares, fear of the dark, or excessive clinginess at bedtime.

Emotional Responses: Intense anger, heightened anxiety, or sudden withdrawal from social life.

Physical Complaints: Frequent stomachaches or headaches with no underlying medical cause.

Academic Challenges: Difficulty focusing and a noticeable drop in school performance.

Support Strategies for Parents

Validate Feelings: Offer comfort with phrases like, "It is understandable to feel scared; I am here with you."

Maintain Routines: Predictable meal and sleep schedules help restore a sense of order.

Do Not Force Conversation: Allow the child to open up at their own pace. Listen without judgment when they choose to talk.

Model Calm: Children look to their parents' emotional state. Managing your own anxiety is vital for your child’s emotional regulation.

When to Seek Professional Support

If symptoms do not subside after several weeks, if they significantly impair the child's daily functioning (school, social life, sleep), or if there are concerns regarding safety (such as self-harm), it is essential to consult a child and adolescent mental health specialist. Professional support helps children process their trauma within a safe framework, fostering a healthier recovery.
