What Is Theraplay?
Theraplay is a play therapy approach based on attachment theory. Its primary focus is identifying and repairing difficulties within the parent-child relationship. Individually tailored for each family, Theraplay is active, engaging, and enjoyable. Its main goal is to create healthy interactions between parents and children and to strengthen their emotional connection through structured play. As a result, children can develop a stronger sense of self-worth and feel worthy of love and connection with others.
Theraplay is built around four core dimensions: Structure, Challenge, Engagement, and Nurture. These dimensions are considered the foundation of secure attachment, and each family is evaluated according to their individual needs in these areas. One of the most distinctive aspects of Theraplay is that it not only supports the child's emotional well-being but also focuses on strengthening the relationship between the child and their parents. In other words, parents also receive guidance on how they can adapt their interactions to better support their child's emotional needs.
The Marschak Interaction Method (MIM) session is used to evaluate the parent-child relationship. During this session, parents and children complete a series of simple tasks together. Their interactions are assessed across the four Theraplay dimensions, after which detailed feedback is provided. Based on the child's individual needs, therapeutic play activities are planned. As parents become more comfortable with the process, they gradually take a more active role in the activities while the therapist helps them develop new interaction patterns that support healthier relationships.
If you hope to see positive changes in your child's behavior, one of the most important factors is the way you relate to your child. Theraplay not only supports the child's emotional world but also helps parents recognize and develop the changes they may need in their own parenting approach. Because positive changes are often observed relatively quickly, I wanted to provide this brief introduction to Theraplay play therapy.
