Theraplay® Play Therapy
Theraplay Play Therapy
Theraplay is a structured play therapy approach based on attachment theory. Its primary focus is to identify and repair disruptions within the parent–child relationship. It is a person-centered, active, and enjoyable therapeutic method.
The main goal is to create healthy interactions between children and parents, fostering an emotional and positive bond through play. As a result, the child develops a sense of being lovable and worthy of love, which contributes to improved self-esteem and confidence.
Core Dimensions of Theraplay
Theraplay is structured around four fundamental dimensions:
- Structure
- Challenge
- Nurture
- Engagement (Bonding)
These dimensions are assessed to determine the necessary support and structuring within the relationship. Healthy attachment is believed to be built upon these four core components.
Key Features of Theraplay
One of the most distinctive aspects of Theraplay is that it not only supports the child’s emotional regulation but also focuses on repairing and strengthening the parent–child relationship.
In other words, parents also receive guidance and consultation regarding how they may need to adjust their approach to their child.
MEM Session
The MEM session is an assessment phase in which the parent–child relationship is observed. It consists of a series of simple tasks completed together by the parent and child.
During this process, their capacities and interactions in relation to the four dimensions are evaluated. Based on the feedback obtained, play activities are then structured according to the child’s needs.
As parents become more ready and confident, their role in the play gradually increases. In this way, the therapist facilitates meaningful and lasting change within the relationship.
Conclusion
If you are expecting behavioral changes in your child, the most critical factor is the way you interact with them. Theraplay does not only aim to heal the child’s emotional world but also supports the transformation needed in the parent’s approach.
Theraplay play therapy often leads to relatively fast and positive outcomes.
