This training course has been designed to explain where and how to begin educating children with autism and to equip participants with practical skills. The materials provided to participants clearly demonstrate, step by step, how to plan and deliver instruction in basic skills. In planning the course, consideration has been given to the session-based education system used by the majority of children with autism.
Course Content:
Many children with autism spectrum disorder perform below their potential because their families or educators demand advanced and complex skills without giving sufficient attention to the teaching of foundational skills. What these foundational skills are—which we might liken to the foundations of a building—and how they should be taught must be among the priority questions for educators and families. In this workshop, the fundamental skills that serve as prerequisites for many other skills in the development of children with autism spectrum disorder, and how these skills should be taught, will be shared based on over 15 years of practical experience. At the start of the workshop, we will discuss the teaching methods frequently used in the instruction of foundational skills. Subsequently, we will cover attention-directing, responding to names, following instructions, discrimination skills, requesting, waiting, prerequisite skills for developing language skills, basic play skills, and the teaching of simple and complex imitation skills, presented in a hierarchical sequence. During the workshop, how each skill is assessed, practised, data is collected and visualised will be explained, supported by videos and dramatisations.
