Various teaching approaches have been adopted to teach imitation skills to children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) during early childhood. The focus of this workshop is Reciprocal Imitation Training (RIT; Dr Brooke Ingersoll), a method of imitation training based on social reciprocity and designed to enhance social imitation. Research on RIT has shown that RIT, a teaching method based on a naturalistic behavioural approach, is an effective method for advancing the level of spontaneous imitation in children with ASD. RIT is one of the scientifically grounded methods recommended for imitation training in children with ASD. RIT is a method that is easy to implement, enjoyable and quick to apply. KTE can be easily implemented by parents. In KTE, imitation skills training is aligned with early childhood development, targeting object-action imitation skills—which involve object play skills—and gesture imitation skills, which encompass gestures within pre-linguistic communication skills. Furthermore, the nature of KTE’s implementation allows for the assessment of imitation skills during the teaching process.
