The training begins with the theoretical background of learning difficulties in mathematics and number sense, and the relationships between them, focusing on how these are measured, assessed and improved. Two games developed by the researcher specifically for this purpose are described, along with their principles of operation. The session focuses on how we can observe and monitor progress.
Course Content:
Recent research in the fields of developmental psychology, education and neuroscience indicates that humans possess an innate learning mechanism comprising a small number of subsystems. Two of these subsystems (number and shape) are directly related to the learning of mathematics, whilst the other three support this learning process. The number subsystem, in turn, consists of four subsystems. These interact with one another to form the mechanism that enables humans to learn mathematics. Consequently, in order to learn mathematics, humans draw upon not only number perception but also shape perception, objects, actions and the social environment. An educational environment that addresses all these systems develops the child’s existing potential to the highest degree. This is because fluency in these subsystems forms the capacity for mathematical learning. So, is it possible to develop these innate systems? The answer is yes. By using games specifically designed to develop these fundamental skills—and which children can play with both their peers and adults—we are able to foster these skills. Thanks to these games, not only do these fundamental skills develop, but children also spend quality time with their peers and, in particular, their parents. Whilst our games are specifically designed to support the development of the numerical sub-system, they also indirectly foster other sub-systems of human cognition, such as spatial awareness, object recognition, actions and the social environment. In summary, by playing these games, children not only have fun but also enhance their learning potential, particularly in mathematics. The games have been designed based on 20 years of research experience and data-driven insights. By laying the groundwork for the knowledge and skills intended to be acquired through the school curriculum, they support academic success.
