Existential Analysis and Logotherapy is an existential therapy school developed by the Viennese psychiatrist Viktor Frankl (1905–1997). Frankl argued that people’s primary and most important motivation is the effort to give meaning to their lives.
Accordingly, the meaning a person pursues is the primary element that structures their life.
Existential Analysis and Logotherapy is one of four schools within the field of existential therapies. What distinguishes this school from other existential therapy schools is that it places the individual’s search for meaning
at the center of the therapeutic process (hence: logotherapy—meaning therapy)
and emphasizes how the individual can direct their efforts
and how they can orient themselves toward creative, relational, and attitudinal goals
beyond themselves.
Existential Analysis and Logotherapy propose confronting life’s tragic aspects with a tragic optimism. The path to this involves the stages of awareness, responsibility, freedom, choice, and the will to meaning. On this path, each individual experiences their own unique journey.
In the Existential Analysis and Logotherapy Workshop, we will explore the core concepts of this approach.
We will examine the significance these concepts hold for our individual lives.
We will then focus on how, in a logotherapy session, the logotherapist and the client
experience these concepts through various methods.
